Berkshire Theatre Festival Announces Casting for Candida

STOCKBRIDGE, MA: Berkshire Theatre Festival announced today that Jayne Atkinson will play the title role in George Bernard Shaw’s Candida. Anders Cato will direct the production, which will open the Main Stage 80th anniversary season and run June 17 - July 5.

Jayne Atkinson has been nominated twice for the Tony Award for Best Actress (Enchanted April and The Rainmaker) and is well known for playing Karen Hayes on the television show, 24. Her husband, Michel Gill, will play her husband on stage, the Reverend James Morell. His past BTF appearances include The Hasty Heart and The Transit of Venus. Gill says, “I cherish my long history with Berkshire Theatre Festival and am thrilled to be back. What really takes the cake is that I get to act with Jayne Atkinson again. It's been 10 years since we last got to play on the stage, and there's nothing quite like working with my wife!”

David Schramm will play Candida’s father, Mr. Burgess. He is familiar to television audiences for his role of Roy Biggins on NBC’s Wings and his Broadway credits include London Assurance and Tartuffe. Schramm also has a long history with BTF, most recently appearing in Heartbreak House. After performing in Candida, he will be play Pozzo in Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot at BTF’s Unicorn Theatre, July 29 - August 23.

Berkshire native Finn Wittrock will play Eugene Marchbanks, the dashing young poet who comes between Candida and her husband. Wittrock is a recent graduate of The Juilliard School. Samantha Soule will play Proserpine Garnett. She is a graduate of The Julliard School. Her Broadway credits include Coram Boy and Dinner at Eight. Jeremiah Wiggins will play Reverend Alexander Mill. He has performed in New York City at Lincoln Center Institute and Manhattan Theater Club.
