Opera Providence Features Internationally Renowned
Soprano Maria Spacagna
PROVIDENCE, RI: The beauty and art of opera will have a special flair next
Sunday, July 24th when soprano Maria Spacagna joins the voices of Opera Providence. Opera
on the Hill, an entertaining series of free concerts, is made possible with support from
the Providence Neighborhood Arts Initiative, the Providence Department of Art, Culture and
Tourism and the City of Providence. Opera-lovers and newcomers to this style of music will
delight in an entertaining evening of favorites from opera, operetta and musical theatre.
The concert takes place in De Pasquale Square, Providence's renowned Italian piazza, in
the heart of Federal Hill on Atwell's Avenue.
July 24th features The Bohemians and More, a program highlighting Puccini's La Boheme.
Soprano Maria Spacagna, born and raised on Federal Hill, will be joined by Lynne S. Floyd
(soprano), Oshin Gregorian (baritone), Fred Scheff (tenor), and OP's Music Director
Matthew Larson accompanying on piano. The sound of music will fill the evening air
beginning at 5pm on Sunday, July 24th. The final performance of this series takes place on
the following Sunday, July 31st.
Ms. Spacagna has been a regular guest artist at many of the world's most prestigious opera
houses, including the Metropolitan Opera, Teatro alla Scala di Milano, Bavarian State
Opera, Deutsche Oper, and Arena di Verona.
Ms. Spacagna's Metropolitan Opera debut was opposite Luciano Pavarotti. Placido Domingo
conducted Maria at the Metropolitan in her signature role, Madama Butterfly. Maestro
Domingo also invited her to sing at the White House for President and Mrs. Clinton at a
State Dinner honoring the Prime Minister of Italy. Awards honoring Maria's accomplishments
include the Pell Award for Excellence in the Arts and the first Distinguished Artist Award
presented by the Rhode Island Civic Chorale and Orchestra.
Ms. Spacagna has served as Artistic Advisor to Opera Providence since 1998. She currently
shares her talent, experience and knowledge with voice students in Rhode Island, Boston
and New York City. Upcoming activities include presenting Master Classes in Colorado. Ms.
Spacagna will be joining the Voice Faculty at Boston University in the Fall of 2005.
Opera Providence engages and inspires audiences through opera as the ultimate theater
experience of music. OPERAtunity, our education and outreach program, provides
opportunities for children and youth throughout greater Providence and the urban ring.
Since 1998, the program has served more than 27,000 children, youth and adults.
