Opera-lovers and newcomers to this style of music will delight in an entertaining evening of favorites from opera, operetta and musical theatre. The concert takes place in De Pasquale Square, Providence's renowned Italian piazza, in the heart of Federal Hill on Atwell's Avenue.
July 24th features The Bohemians and More, a program highlighting Puccini's La Boheme. Soprano Maria Spacagna, born and raised on Federal Hill, will be joined by Lynne S. Floyd (soprano), Oshin Gregorian (baritone), Fred Scheff (tenor), and OP's Music Director Matthew Larson accompanying on piano. The sound of music will fill the evening air beginning at 5pm on Sunday, July 24th. The final performance of this series takes place on the following Sunday, July 31st.
Ms. Spacagna has been a regular guest artist at many of the world's most prestigious opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera, Teatro alla Scala di Milano, Bavarian State Opera, Deutsche Oper, and Arena di Verona.
Ms. Spacagna's Metropolitan Opera debut was opposite Luciano Pavarotti. Placido Domingo conducted Maria at the Metropolitan in her signature role, Madama Butterfly. Maestro Domingo also invited her to sing at the White House for President and Mrs. Clinton at a State Dinner honoring the Prime Minister of Italy. Awards honoring Maria's accomplishments include the Pell Award for Excellence in the Arts and the first Distinguished Artist Award presented by the Rhode Island Civic Chorale and Orchestra.
