Our History

Founded in 1967 by the late John J. Goodwill, the
Camelot Players of Greater Lowell was one of the first dinner theatre companies in New
England. "Dinner Theater" was a nouveau idea 30 years ago, but Camelot
decided to bring it to life. Our name originated from whence we began, all those years
ago, at the Speare House restaurant in Lowell where productions were played out within the
confines of the Camelot Lounge. After eight years of dinner theater we took our shows 'on
the road' and brought entire productions into hospitals, local clubs, other restaurants,
military bases, and a county jail!
Since 1989, however, we have found our home here at the Tyngsboro Country Club through the benevolence of
owners Tammy & Glenn (thanks, guys!), an establishment once owned by a sister of the
late Walter Brennan. Each spring and fall another production, most often a comedy, comes
to fruition under familiar lights.
A community theatre group dedicated to quality amateur theatre performance, Camelot has
also often been found at the competitive activities at Brandeis University with EMACT's
yearly festival, which brings together local groups from across the area. Camelot's
entries have been recognized for excellence, with our members earning nominations and
awards in many categories. If you haven't already, please refer to the individual synopses
of tonight's performers for specific highlights from Festival awards.
One particular Award we're
very proud of, is our sponsored award at the Brandeis Festival - the John J.
Goodwill Memorial Directing Award. The Award was established and named for our
Founder in 1981, and is presented to the individual(s) chosen by the event Adjudicators as
"Best of Festival" in Directing. It is intended to recognize and promote
excellence in community theatre directing, and to provide recognition for the production
and the theatre company for which the winning director has directed. John held a high
regard for the annual festival, participating personally as a director and actor in many
past events. His life-long devotion, commitment and service to community theatre
earned him the Award title originally, and we still maintain it in his memory to this day.
Camelot's productions are for you - members, friends, and audience. It is only through
your benevolence and appreciation of community theater that we live at all. With all the
commotion on Broadway, it is nice to know that quality amateur theater still finds a home
in the greater-Lowell area. Thank you for being with us.
