The Cast

  • CHRIS MADISON: A professional woman in her 20s
  • FRANCESCA COUTEAU: A middle-aged woman who owns a run-down estate, a former convent (c. 1900); a drinker.
  • ISAAC COUTEAU: Francesca’s adult son, too old to be living at home.   A no-name sculptor; a synesthete*

  • LARRY PHELPS: Chris’ boss; a married real estate agent and developer. Over 35.

*Synesthesia is a condition in which one’s senses are cross-wired, i.e., instead of hearing a bell ring, one might see a color.

On behalf of her boss (and lover), Chris Madison travels to a remote estate on Whidbey Island in Washington’s Puget Sound in order to inspect the property for future development. When a severe rainstorm hits, she is trapped there with the estate’s eccentric owner and her reclusive son… and help is coming no time soon.

The Setting
The Present. Over the course of several days (or weeks). The estate of Mrs. Francesca Couteau on Whidbey Island, WA. The set is minimal with suggested fixtures—not a door but the suggestion of a door. Scenes should move fluidly from one to the other with no blackouts.
