PROVIDENCE: 4/10-5/18 - Black Rep is extremely proud to be directing and premiering
a wonderful new play this month: THE ETYMOLOGY OF BIRD,
by Zakiyyah Alexander. Zakiyyah is a great talent and a playwright to watch, and
while the play received a lot of interest from other theaters, no one had
previously committed to a premiere due to the large cast and important
(some might say inflammatory) subject matter. The play was inspired by the 2004
fatal shooting of 19 year old Timothy Stansbury, Jr., by an NYPD housing
officer. Stansbury, who had just completed his GED and worked at McDonalds, was
taking a shortcut to a party over the roof of his Brooklyn apartment building
when he startled the
officer, who later said he pulled the trigger unintentionally. By approaching
the story as a tale of young love interrupted, the play deals with a
constellation of complex issues around race, class, power, fear, and violence --
while also managing to be funny, surprising, and romantic. Please contact
boxoffice@blackrep.org to reserve
your tickets.
