DUXBURY: Middle and high school singers, guitarists, bassists, keyboardists, drummers and songwriters are invited to unleash their inner rock star at South Shore Conservatory’s new Rock Camp, coming February school vacation week to South Shore Conservatory’s Duxbury campus, 64 St. George Street. For four days, February 21 to 24, musicians from across the South Shore will join to form rock bands, learn the ropes and receive individualized performance coaching. Rock Camp’s curriculum, developed by South Shore Conservatory’s team of professional musician/educators, touches on every aspect of performing in a real band. Workshops cover scales and soloing, rhythm playing, chords and inversions, licks and techniques as well as effective listening and improvisation. Vocalists have the opportunity to experience being a both lead vocalist and backup singer. Band rehearsals focus on stage presence, interacting with an audience and overall sound development. Videos of artists and bands are viewed and analyzed for stage, moves, costume development and audience participation. From playing techniques to stage presence, Rock Camp presents a variety of workshops designed to turn the garage player into a confident performer. Participants can “sleep in” during vacation week since each daily session begins at 12 noon and runs until 3 pm. Also, this year each meeting will focus on one musician's unique approaches and unique contributions to the development of the artform. All participants' questions will be addressed. Saturday, February 4, 2-3:30pm (Thelonious Monk); Saturday, February 18, 2-3:30pm (Charles Mingus) @ Dudley Library Auditorium, 65 Warren Street. ALL ARE WELCOME!! NO CHARGE!!

PROVIDENCE: Registration for ZooCamp at Roger Williams Park Zoo opens at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 21st on the Zoo’s website, www.rwpzoo.org.  ZooCamp is an environmental day camp that’s a unique option for parents who want to have a “happy camper” during winter, spring and summer break. Winter ZooCamp runs during Rhode Island’s public school vacation week, February 21-24. The camp is open to children age four through fifth grade, and offers environmentally-themed activities, crafts, animal encounters and Zoo tours. The deadline to register for the winter session is February 13. Winter ZooCamp is comprised of two different themed camps, each tailored to a specific age range. Tadpole Academy is a half-day camp (morning session: 8:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m., afternoon session: 12:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.) where four and five year olds can have fun exploring our wild world through age appropriate stories, crafts, games and Zoo exploration, in a small group of only ten campers per session. This year’s theme is “Animals in Winter.” Campers will discover some of the ways animals survive the cold winters, from furry coats to long journeys. Kids in first through fifth grade can enroll in Winter Adventures, a full day camp that offers a variety of activities and adventures at the Zoo that are just right for “big kids.” This year’s theme is “Around the Zoo in 4 Days,” campers will take a trip around the world as they explore the animals and exhibit areas of Roger Williams Park Zoo. New for 2012: daily registration options are available for the Winter Adventures ZooCamp. Children in first – fifth grades can be registered for one, two, three or all 4 days of the camp. Winter ZooCamp fees vary depending on the particular camp program, but range from $115- $165 for Zoo members and $140 - $190 for non-members. The deadline to register is one week prior to the desired week of camp, but there are a limited number of spots available per week, and enrollment is on a first-come, first-served basis. Registration for all ZooCamps (winter, spring & summer) starts January 21 on the zoo’s website. For more information and to register, visit www.rwpzoo.org and click on “ZooCamp” under the Education tab.
