WORKSHOPS

Last Update: 07/02/09
When you go to a workshop...be sure you mention you saw the notice on the NEED website!

Connecticut

COLCHESTER: The Colchester Community Theatre (CCT) announces its Children's Summer Theater Workshop, July 13 through July 24. Auditions will be held Tuesday, June 9, 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Saturday, June 13, 9:00 - 11:00 a.m., at the St. Andrew Church Hall, 128 Norwich Avenue, Colchester. The workshop is open to all children entering grade 2 through grade 12 in the fall. Every child must audition to attend the program. There are NO exceptions. Please note that the auditions are used only for determining placement within the program, not for determining if a child is eligible to enter the program. The program is limited to 100 children. In the event that more than 100 children audition, a lottery will be held to determine which 100 children get into the program. Each child is to bring sheet music or an instrumental recording and be prepared to sing. An accompanist will be provided. The workshop will be held at Bacon Academy Auditorium, July 13 through July 24, Monday through Friday, 9am-Noon, culminating in a show on July 25 at 2:00 p.m. The program fee is $90 per child (additional $15 for non-residents – waived for CCT members), payable at auditions. Enrollment and health forms will be completed by parents and/or guardians at auditions as well. The actual musical for the workshop has not been selected to date. CCT is currently researching suitable material.  For any additional information, please contact Wallis Johnson 267-1023 or Laura Brown 537-3259.

GARDINER: The popular Summer Shenanigans Visual and Performing Arts Day Camp held at Johnson Hall, 280 Water Street, Gardiner, is a well-known favorite of talented youngsters. They use their creativity to write a play, build sets, make props, and perform an original piece. Campers decide what character they want to be and then create a play and all the artwork for backdrops and costumes. This creative process results in a production on the last day of camp. The camp offers five sessions, for different age groups, based on the grade they will be entering in fall 2008. Session II, July 6-10, for kids entering grades 2-4; Session III, July 13-17, for grades 3-5; and Session IV, July 20-24 for grades 5-8. New for 2009 is a teen session: July 27-31, from 1-4pm, for teens entering grades 9-12.  For many years, people have asked for a session for kids who have "graduated" from Shenanigans. Johnson Hall is happy to kick off a new teen session, which will continue the development of Upstage Youth Company, offering teens a chance to create their own play in their own voices, and learn more tech and production skills as well. Tuition is $110 for half-day sessions and $195 for full-day, which includes art materials and a snack each day. Shenanigans and Upstage Youth Company are staffed by theater and art professionals who return each year to provide a fun and creative experience for youngsters. Iona McCabe is Theater Director for Session I. Iona has studied theater and dance in New York City and at USM. She spent a year touring and directing with the Missoula Children's Theater. She co-directs the Olios of Cony's Chizzle Wizzle, and has been directing Shenanigans since 1998. Kathleen Nation is Theater Director for all other sessions. Kathleen trained at USM, Roehampton Institute in London, New Playwright's Theater in Denver and Orange Coast College in California. She has directed both Winter and Summer Shenanigans for several years. Kathleen is the drama coach for Monmouth Middle School, and directs the Olios of Cony's Chizzle Wizzle. Assistant Director Coleman Nation is a veteran of Shenanigans and local theater productions. Johnson Hall is seeking a new Art Director, as Yana Suponitskaya is entering a graduate program and will not be available.  Space is limited, and many weeks fill very quickly. Registration brochures are distributed through many area schools, mailed, and are available at Johnson Hall, Gardiner Public Library, Gardiner City Hall and the Greater Gardiner Boys & Girls Club. Scholarships (50%) are available, funded by a grant from Bank of America. For more information, contact Johnson Hall Performing Arts Center at (207) 582-7144 or email info@johnsonhall.org or johnsonhall@verizon.net.  Visit Johnson Hall's website at www.johnsonhall.org

NEW!! BOSTON: Acting with the Alexander Technique: A NEW Master Class with Betsy Polatin and Judy Braha Alexander Technique has long been regarded as an integral part of acting training.  The change in thinking and physical shifts are ideal for freeing the actor's impulses, imagination, voice and body onstage.  This enhanced awareness enables the actor to bring themselves to the character in the present moment.   Teaching AT and Acting training in the same studio allows the actor to combine both skills and to illuminate a new freedom and path to creativity.    Now, this dynamic duo is beginning to offer team-taught master classes to the professional theater community, using the forum of scene and/or monologue work to introduce a model of duel-consciousness.  Students can hope to address any number of key challenges including: *performance anxiety; *feeling stuck in your process as an actor; *perceived physical or vocal limitations; *difficulties connecting self with imagination, character and text; *lack of freedom on stage; *bringing your impulses to the moment to moment work of the actor.  Prerequisites: professional actors only please.  Monday, August 10th and Monday, September 14th.
